I purchased a set of heated EXO2 mitts
recently and I thought that I'd give some general feedback, positive and areas
for "improvement".I'll likely post the same review on a few outdoor
forums.
Myself:
Canadian, professional engineer.Wearing gloves daily (winter), outside activities
continues until -35 degrees Celsius (-45 with wind chill), runner, horse rider
- in short, an outdoor fanatic.
Customer Service:
I dealt with the US supplier (Drew), and the service was great. I received
a defective battery, and he shipped a replacement immediately, and gave me 20%
discount on a spare that I ordered. Superb.
Some comments on the general function of gloves - comments were gathered from
various friends who also use gloves on a daily basis.Only comments common
to all were included to eliminate personal preferences.I used the gloves
almost on a daily basis, and when not in use, I left them with friends who owns
a boarding stable - they used the gloves when feeding, tractor driving, opening/closing
gates, attaching halters, etc.
Areas to improve:
- As is, the mitt works well down to -10 degrees C (Below -10, a heated
strip/element is required in the thumb. The glove depends on the heating
to work in low temperatures and insulation is simply too thin to keep the thumb
warm. (This was the single most important comment!). Almost everybody
was willing to accept a reduction in run time for this feature.
- Battery connection: Straight rather than angled
- a straight connection would be easier to insert than the 90 degree plug,
- will put less stress on the cable (increase life of cable),
- will simplify access to the on/off button.
- Battery location: the location reduces wrist movement - especially on
side where a watch is worn.If the battery pouch is off-set by 60-90 degrees
down, it should eliminate the contact between watch & battery and allow more
flexibility.
- Elastic wrist restriction: the position need to be further forward, closer
to the thumb, or be replaced with an adjustable strap (velcro) - typically in
use on ski gloves. When a heavy jacket is used, the location of the elastic,
being the narrowest area of the glove, forces the glove down (from the hand). One
must reposition the gloves constantly for proper fit.
Positive comments:
- The best of any portable, battery operated glove on the marked!
- Tapered/chisel cut works well, better than the "normal" round type
of mitt.
- Wear areas are good - gloves should last a long time.
- Batteries are good, replacement price reasonable (two sets generally required)
- Overall Price - acceptable - because it works.
I had questions about the glove from construction workers (steel & rebar). They
use large quantities of heat packs on the back of heavy duty gloves to keep going
in low temperatures.A "liner" glove would be ideal for them -
it would allow them to wear heavy duty leather gloves over top, and keep the hands
warm.
To summarize - the glove will work well in most chilly environments, but in the
really cold climates, the addition of a thumb heating strip will increase the functionality
tremendously.(I'll probably buy another pair if this modification is included!)
