The world's leading supplier of divers dry suits is Typhoon International, Ltd. based in Redcar, England. Following an unsatisfactory experience using other heating systems for their diver suits, Typhoon sought a new partner with whom to develop a system for keeping divers warm at depths of 150 feet. The clear goal was to allow divers to stay down and enjoy the dive for longer periods, while also avoiding the unpleasant chill associated with the waiting period prior to rising to the surface after the dive.
Prior versions were heavy, required unwieldy batteries, yielded to temperature fluctuations and were unreliable. Knowing that there had to be a better way, Typhoon sought the best available technology and ultimately selected exo” and FabRoc™ to provide the ICEBREAKER heating system. This selection was made only after exhaustive testing for pressure, safety, prevention of water ingress, temperature maintenance and reliability.
ICEBREAKER comprises of a 3mm neoprene under-suit vest, containing exo” FabRoc™ heat pads. These pads are encapsulated together with a conductive tinned copper braid in a nylon envelope. A connector leads to a water proof canister, which houses a lithium-ion battery, normally mounted on the diver's flotation device or cylinder. The ultimate compliment to the combined exo” and Typhoon effort was winning the highly prestigious Diving Innovation Award for 2004 at Oceanology International for the ICEBREAKER.
The exo” FabRoc™ heat pads within ICEBREAKER are designed to operate at an optimum 108°F, protecting users from ambient temperatures which can fall to 36°F . Two pads are positioned on the front and two on the back, providing enveloping warmth designed to promote longer visits to the oceans depths. The battery unit is designed to provide up to 70 minutes of constant warmth and is fully recharged within six hours.
If you are serious about diving, take charge of your atmosphere. There’s enough to contend with while diving in deep water. Don’t let the cold be one of them!
